Acupuncture Q&A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a painless treatment for joint pain and other musculoskeletal issues.

During an acupuncture treatment, Dr. Kay Kim, provides these services. He inserts tiny needles into strategic places on your skin. Placing the needles in these areas stimulates your muscles and nerves and increases circulation, encouraging your body’s natural healing process.

What issues can benefit from acupuncture?

Dr. Kay Kim uses acupuncture to treat various medical issues, including:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Back and neck pain
  • Arthritis
  • Auto accidents and work injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Strains and sprains
  • Sports injuries
  • Allergies

Acupuncture can also be used for facial revitalization and women’s sexual health.

What does acupuncture involve?

Acupuncture takes an hour or less. Dr. Kay Kim offers several types of acupuncture, including metal, electrical, and ear acupuncture.

To determine the type that’s best for you, your provider reviews your medical records and asks about your symptoms and lifestyle. Next, they complete a physical exam, gently pressing on the parts of your body that are painful and checking your skin for redness and bruising.

Your provider then looks at your tongue. In acupuncture, the color, shape, and coating of your tongue provide key insights into other parts of your body. They also check the pulse in your wrist, assessing its rhythm and strength.

After gathering the necessary information, Dr. Kay Kim inserts a series of small needles into specific areas of your skin called meridians. The needles are incredibly thin, so the treatment isn’t painful. You might feel a small pinch or prick, but any discomfort should subside quickly.

Your provider may apply heat or a mild electrical current to the needles, depending on the type of acupuncture you receive.

Once placed, the needles stimulate your muscles, nerves, and connective tissues. That improves your circulation, reduces inflammation, and promotes your body’s healing process.

After 30-60 minutes, your provider carefully removes the needles and provides recovery instructions.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The number of acupuncture treatments you need depends on various factors, but most people see a significant improvement in their symptoms after 6-8 sessions.* To ensure a positive outcome, attend each of your appointments and follow your provider’s recovery instructions as prescribed.
